PANORAMA – ALGORITHMS BY IAN MCDONALD (ENG)

Simply told, the film follows three young blind chess players- Darpan, Sai Krishna, Anant, and their inspiring and indefatigable mentor Charudatta, around India and then internationally in the search for recognition and victory measuring their final goal to become champions in sighted as well as blind chess championships. Exploring both the personal and family worlds of the trio (and hinting at the class differences that cut across the social fact of blindness), exploring the spectrum of blindness (and blind chess) and how it impacts on the game, McDonald doesn’t neglect to chronicle what one could call the dead moments with an accomplished poetic eye.

PANORAMA: Odayaka Na Nichijo by Nobuteru Uchida (ENG)

Nobuteru Uchida’s third feature film (2nd fiction film), Odayaka, almost entirely takes place in the interior landscape of its protagonists (something unparalleled amongst most 3/11 films). The film’s title literally translated to “one calm day,” which is irony in itself – centered on its wretched heroines – the aura is pervaded by everything but calm. Uchida spent some time apart from the disaster. Fully aware of the moral issue of representing tragedy, he accepted the gap between the reality of the 3/11 disaster and the attempt to record it.

PANORAMA: VERS MADRID (SYLVAIN GEORGE) ENG

After following illegal immigrants for three years in Calais, Sylvain George’s work came to an initial praise among film critics: In fact, his diptych Qu’ils Reposent En Révolte (Des Figures De Guerre) and Les Éclats (Ma Gueule, Ma Révolte, Mon Nom), two films best understood as a single, individual work, were essential as pure depictions of the human factor that these wondering undocumented citizens represented, the whole issue of immigration put under a magnifying glass.

PANORAMA: TRAVELING LIGHT (GINA TELAROLI) (ENG)

Traveling Light dwells on the subject of travel in all its metaphysical sense, either as a documentary of travel, as a recreation, or as a mixture of both. The departure, the sense of loss and moving away of territory, the longing and nostalgia of a simple voyage: feelings and sensations piled up and captured by the artificial eye.

PANORAMA: WILD AND PRECIOUS (BILL MOUSOULIS) (ENG)

Under the eye of a camera which follows its characters from the immediacy and texture of digital cinema, Bill Mousoulis bets for a fiction circumscribed in the current Greek economic crisis, which works not as a background event for the film, but as a symbolic spleen for its lead character, an old Italian filmmaker drawn to the political chaos and social critique in Athens, away from him family and friends, like the stance of other registry heroes.

PANORAMA: LA LEGGENDA DI KASPAR HAUSER (DAVIDE MANULI) (ENG)

When thinking about such eccentric definitions of a genre like “experimental sci-fi spaghetti cowboy electro dance films” probably nothing will come to mind, except the last work of Italian prodigy Davide Manuli. The Legend of Kaspar Hauser opens with a mysterious character receiving the visit of some alien ships, which will proceed to deliver young Kaspar Hauser into the desert. Kaspar is then rescued by the town’s sheriff (Vincent Gallo playing a delirious double role in this film), who will proceed to teach him the secret language of dance.
